I recognize almost everyone. Dr. Whacker on the right, and his two/three kids. A few outliers for me. Definitely fewer follicles, and more pounds now. Oh, Gil not paying attention....... |

#20 Ron Dailey—A fine wine or aged cheese?
--Ron graduated from Glendale Academy just two years before I graduated from Mile High Academy. (No more info needed!)
--He got a BA in Psychology/Business at La Sierra where he moonlighted as an ambulance driver.
--He took graduate work at Cal State San Bernardino and Walla Walla College, worked at Glendale Adventist Hospital and at a County Crisis Center at Walla Walla.
--On a Christmas break he was doing some research at UCR and was asked to work at LLUSD for a one year term. He turned the job offer down and returned to Walla Walla to start work on a PhD.
--On reflection, he recontacted the dental school, accepted a position on the TEAM program in 1975 and through skill and good looks started to teach management classes and became the director of Student Affairs.
--As we all remember, Ron was totally invested in “student life”. He reflected at that time the concerns he had were primarily in two areas. 1) the cost of dental education and encouraging students to control their expenses. He continued to say that he couldn’t imagine tuition getting any higher. (We may ask Ron at our reunion his thoughts on that now!) 2) His other concern was student’s general apathy toward their faith. He recognized that the curriculum demands were not helpful in this regard and he was part of an ad-hoc committee looking at this challenge. Ron recognized the need for LLUSD to model “total health” to the students to equip them to provide it to their patients.
So, congratulations Ron.
Below, the announcement of Ron’s coronation: (Oh, Ron Dailey-----Fine Wine)
Ronald Dailey, PhD, executive associate dean, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, has been appointed by the University board of trustees to serve as the School’s fifth dean, effective July 1, 2013. He will replace Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD, who has served in that position since 1994.
Richard Hart, MD, DrPH, president and CEO, Loma Linda University Health, announced the appointment Tuesday evening, February 26, to a large gathering of LLUSD faculty and staff. “After a careful search process, Dr. Dailey’s name was selected for presentation to the University’s board of trustees. Dr. Dailey’s long track record makes him an obvious choice for dean and our board confirmed that recommendation. I am delighted to welcome Ron into that position.”
Dr. Dailey was first employed by the School of Dentistry in June 1975 as an instructor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, while completing a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology at Walla Walla College.
In July of 1978 he was promoted to assistant professor, and became director of Admissions and Student Affairs; in 1986 his title changed to assistant dean for admissions and student affairs.
On September 30, 1993, Dr. Dailey was appointed associate dean for academic affairs, the same year that he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation which focused on a re-analysis of the relationship of psychomotor and perceptual skills to student performance in dental school.
With the acquisition of his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Higher and Professional Education from USC in 1994, Dr. Dailey was promoted to associate professor, Department of Dental Educational Services; and a year later (September 1995) he was named the Department’s chair, a position he maintains.
One of the more meaningful accomplishments of Dr. Dailey’s teaching and administrative career has been writing, with LLU professor of biostatistics Jay S. Kim, PhD, a ground-breaking textbook,Biostatistics for Oral Healthcare, published by Blackwell Munksgaard in 2008 (344 pp.), that M. E. Munn calls the “first solid biostatistical text completely devoted to oral health research.”
On June 1, 2009, after 15 years as associate dean for academic affairs, Dr. Dailey was named executive associate dean, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry—a position that justified an accumulating list of duties he was already performing.
Dr. Dailey joins a limited fraternity of dental school deans who are not trained as dentists among them the current dean, University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry dean, John Featherstone, MSc, PhD.
Among the honors Dr. Dailey has received is his honorary membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon—a society that was established in 1914 at Northwestern University Dental School in Lincoln, Nebraska, to promote and recognize scholarship and character among students of dentistry. He has also been selected for Teaching Excellence awards in 1986 and 1987; and the School of Dentistry’s Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
Dr. Dailey retains a seat on the Loma Linda City Council that he won in 2009. He is married to Karen Winston, MD, a Loma Linda University pediatrician, and has three adult children: Casey, Colin and Katie.

#19 The Golden Probe Awards, Sophomore Year
From the Program:
Yep, Boy George
The 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and without the Soviets
Second year of dental school, second Golden Probes. Unfortunately, I don’t have any documentation from our Freshmen Golden Probes. I do remember tho, that it was in the amphitheater across the hallway from our lab. I believe we had haystacks in the lab, then retreated to the amphitheater for the Awards. Any other memories will have to be shared at our Palms Springs Reunion.
Opening Address: Dr. J. Klooster
“Beat It”: Dennis Zingler
Celebrity Roast: Mark Romanelli, Dennis Bradshaw, Kelly Mohr, Gary Dudar, Victor Burdick, Randy Boyd
The Awards: (these are just a sampling)
--Male Attire Award
--Inspirational Female
--Projectile Award
--Punker Award
--Macho Man Award
--Least Time in Lab Award
--Latest to Class Award
--Pep Boy Award
--Most Unique Lab Décor Award
--Most Dycal Award
It concluded with “Scandle of the Year”, (man….we misspelled scandal), by John Cummings and Jim Loye, Year in Review, (my snarky perspective of the year), and Closing Remarks by the above two.

#18 The Dress Code
The program I have been using forever, Windows Live Writer, is no longer supported, it has been on life support for a while, but it has now died. Time to finally learn WordPress.
Thanksgiving was busy; family, work, people around you……yourself. Let’s continue, a couple more blogs on our sophomore year, then on to Year 3!
Just a few highlights as reported in News Caries:
--No undershirts (worn as outershirts), jeans, shorts, thongs, moccasins, gym shoes, sweat shirts and pants, hiking boots.
--Trousers must be “keeping with our profession”. Hmm……
--A turtleneck sweater is OK. Hmm X2. (Oh, it’s the 80’s).
--Wear socks. (no discussion on the length of said socks, whew)
--Those that wear “mandarin type” clinic clinic jackets don’t need to wear a tie. Thoughtful. (I conjure up a vision of Dr. Evil here).
--MEN: Hair must be clean, neat and well groomed. It cannot fall over your eyes when you are bent forward. (Hmm, the last time I SAW my hair was in dental school)
--WOMEN: The barrettes you wear must match your hair color. Ladies, did you always follow this rule?? Also, no ribbons or scarves, and if you wear rubber bands, they must be inconspicuous.
--Fingernails must be kept short, clean and neatly trimmed. (This was especially important since we didn’t wear gloves back then!!)

#16 The Social Spotlight
The 256th and final episode of MASH was February 28, 1983. It remained the ‘most watched’ program on television until the 2010 Super Bowl. A 27 year record. Curious, I remember it. LLU had numerous “MASH farewell parties”. As you may remember is was about the Korean War but, for the first few years of its 11 year run, the Vietnam War was raging. Much of its ‘political commentary’ was played out in Korea but directed at Vietnam.
I was solidly in college during the last years of Vietnam, (1970-75), going to a community college in Denver for 3 of those years. However, many vets were returning home trying to put their lives, bodies and heads back together and I still remember how f**ked up they were. (sorry).
Since then the US (and our patients) have been involved in wars in Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Kuwait, Somali, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq (again), Libya, and now we are battling ISIS…..everywhere. No commentary here. Just the messenger.
Sorry, moving on……
Whoa, whoa, before I move on I have to share this…… I googled “numbers in Spanish” so that I didn’t misspell ‘seis’, this is what I got:
That’s real helpful……
The “Social Spotlight” was a big part of News Caries as well as our class. The following is from just one of our newsletters. We WERE busy!
--Seis de Mayo Party (May 6) at Knott’s Berry Farm. ($8.00)
--Beach vesper/party at Balboa Beach thanks to Don Kellar
--Dodgers Game, (they lost to SF 8-6)
--Post game at Tommy’s for chiliburgers. You do remember Tommy’s don’t you??!! And to think we ate there before they invented the AED’s!
--Countdown to the second annual Golden Probe Awards.

#16 April Fools Issue 1983
And I quote………
--THE NEW PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT REQUIRMENT: Each student must have seen at least two patients who have AIDS before graduating.
--Dr. Grieve and the entire restorative department have agreed to slow up the pace of their classes.
--Dr. Wical will meet with our class and answer ALL questions we have concerning clinic!
--Next year Mark Romanelli will seek to outdo himself in the pie eating contest by consuming two pies in the time it takes the others to finish eating one! (It is rumored that the dental hygiene student entry is still in the student lounge trying to finish the pie!).
--Arthur Wu give us this handy clinic tip: “To avoid pulp exposures, just place an endodontic stopper on the 245 bur to the measured distance from the x-ray”.
--In an effort to save the students some money, Dr. Grieve has announced that refunds will be available for valuable time lost due to the showing of this travel slides.
And, another Choo-ey

#15 Lab Scab Parties
It took till 1983 for us to send a woman into space??
Remember the “LAB SCAB” parties? from the Social Spotlight: “In honor of those who keep your lab seats warm day and night a LAB SCAB Party has been planned for Tuesday, February 14. We will provide the pizza and pop, you will have to supply the dough (Probably $.75-1.00 per slice and $.35 per drink). Bring your family and friends along so that they will know what you are doing those long night hours in the lab.
Finally, Family Clinic. February 1, Wednesday night starting at 6:30pm. Get this……”The fee is $3.00. No crown preps please”.

#14 Getting Down to Business
Whaaat? This is Willie? American Music Awards of 1983 Top Album of the year!
So, what classes did we take our sophomore year? Glad you asked……

#13 Faculty Focus
Yep, National Lampoon’s Vacation premiered in 1983. Clark Griswold and family on their trip to Walley World.
Craig was great to interview our faculty. I won’t go into details of the interviews but it did help the class of 86 either admire them more, or at least discover why they acted the way they did. Back stories help. What I do want to share is the conclusion of Craig’s interview of Dr. Bernard Byrd, the loveable and loved Oral Surgeon Chief, our “Southern Gentleman”.
When asked about our class, Craig quotes Dr. Byrd in 1983, “People are talking, this class is really good….you have a lot on the ball, you’re cohesive and act as a unit, even the seniors are talking about the class of 86!”
“The Journey” continues…….
And, another classic from Chris Choo.

#12 The Rumor Mill…..matures….
1983 Birthdays
Emily Blunt
Kim Jung-Un
The Rumor Mill is becoming a bit more ‘personal’………….
--There is no truth to the rumor that John Cummings suffers from Cushings Syndrome. He suffers from “cherubism”.
--Rumor has it that Dr. Plata got his “Do-Hickey” caught in a rag wheel. It broke off and he had to have it welded back together by a lab technician. (Is this in code?)
--The rumor that J.M. lost her first patient in the chair is not true. However when he recovered he did reach out and claw her across the face.
--The rumor that Charlie, Rob, and Jim all had Kelly in the chair (dental) is true.
--Rumor has it that there will be a bachelor “Stag” party for Brian Anderson sometime in the near future at Gil Carr’s house, with a stripper.
--2nd Rumor, Gil is the stripper.
--Rumor has it that Warren Creed would like more recognition. Perhaps we could change the Waaaaaayne to Creeeeeed.
--Rumor has it that Shirley Womack wants the “Ms. Coffee” Award next year. She has told Mr. Coffee (Randy) that she has her own private stash in her lab cabinet.
--Rumor has it that somewhere in our class is a NEW natural resource. The Southern California Gas Co. is investigating due to a near class evacuation during Perio a couple of weeks ago.

#11 It’s Time to Name Names…..
Do you all remember Chris Choo’s award winning cartoons?? These WILL bring back some great memories.
First, a shout to Assemblymember Jim Wood, (nah, you’re still Woody) for the editing of News Caries. http://asmdc.org/members/a02/ (“Assemblymember”, my spell check doesn’t know what to do with that…sounds like a lego piece….) Anyway.
--Craig Story, we haven’t forgotten about you, your name keeps popping up on the Caries Check masthead throughout dental school. Thanks for that multi-year commitment.
--Peter Cowley for stocking the lab refrigerator.
--Kelly Mohr for keeping us up to date on birthdays with her posters.
--Jim Wood for organizing the TDN (test distribution network)
--Danny Smith for offering a special deal on the Lares fiber optic handpiece. Hmm, were you getting a kickback from this??
--Jim Loye, Gary Kevorkian, Paula Leyman and Craig Story for the Christmas party at Dr. Parker’s half-finished geodesic dome house. (A quote from my State of the Class Address)---“thanks for their exceptional leadership and ideas for the social activities. Our class has done more in the last two quarters than most classes do in four years. They not only plan the parties, but they figure out a way to finance them and they even clean up after themselves!”
--Tom Simms and Mark Romanelli as clinic reps.
--Renee Ostermiller, Mark Doyle and John Liu for “their political influence in national and state organizations”. You guys WERE important.

#10 How DID we talk to family, friends, and patients, or what is a “long distance call to my patient who lives in Palm Springs”?
Most/many of you are responding on your phones or “personal devices”. This is where we were in 1983 in dental school!
Now, a great entry in The Rumor Mill:
Rumor is......Bruce Taber had pneumonia for 4 days.
Facts are.....Bruce and Brenna were both gone for 4 days and Bruce hasn't stopped smiling since he got back.
Finally, I just love this headline from 1983. It has nothing to do with dentistry. If you look up “irony” in Wikipedia, this is what you find.

#9 The Sophomore Year
Real time comment: Denny and I have really enjoyed hearing from so many of you as you make plans for Palm Springs. Kevin is working on the entertainment at the Golden Probes and Brian is formulating a strategy to encourage all of you to scrounge around and find a few photos from dental school, a few current photos, and for you who can’t make it to the reunion, a short 60 second phone video to tell us what you are up to.
Further, some questions will be coming in the next month or so to trigger a few memories and we are taking submissions for ideas, awards, etc. to be included in the Golden Probes as well. These are your Awards, we want you to be as involved as you want. We are also working on a few surprises, none of you will want to miss this.
So, onward to the sophomore year. Most photos of our class have been updated, looks like some of us were in our clinic attire when we were photographed. Moustache count went from 30 our freshman year to 36 our sophomore year, almost 50% of the men. Hah, another change from our freshmen year: the addition of Kent Brodie, and the absence of Muriel’s picture. Muriel, where were you that day??

#8 Saying good-bye to 1982
1982 Sports figure?!
……I’m taking this no-where……. (OK, I can’t resist…. Title should have been the Rise and Fall of an American Hero……, sorry, couldn’t help it)
Speaking of sports, our class routinely planned outings to see the Dodgers ($5 a ticket), and the Lakers and Kings ($4.50 a ticket). PARKING is now $20—$30 for a Laker game.
I’m kinda tapped out for our Freshman year. Not a lot of memories or memorabilia. We’ll have to discuss more in Palm Springs.
I do remember a very diverse group as we began our journey. Some of us hadn’t finished college, others had abandoned careers to start over. Most of us spoke pretty good English. Individually, all of us wanted to succeed and most of us wanted all of us to succeed. I rediscovered the TDN…….
Test Distribution Network. Back then it meant a lot of trips up to the Administration’s huge Xerox machine, going thru reams of paper to get the data out to all 93 of us. We shared questions, we shared answers, we shared life.

#7 In the Lab
REAL TIME UPDATE: Morning everyone. Denny you are amazing! Everyone needs to give Denny a virtual hug or kiss right now. The time he is spending on our reunion is incredible. What we are seeing in his emails is the tip of Denny’s iceberg. (Or something like that)……
His hard work is, hopefully, further encouragement to join us in Palm Springs and/or track down fellow Eighty6’ers to insist they sign up! Even this lowly, drively blog has over 200 hits now. The torrent of trivia will slow a bit in the near future as Gloria and I are leaving the country for a bit of R and R. But, keep rummaging through old boxes, basements and brains to set aside and bring with you great memories to share.
1982
I didn’t keep a lot of stuff from our freshman year. I think I was in the survival mode at that point. But, I did find what you see below. For you who are retired, that is “stone” not plaster. For the rest of us, that is a “waxup”….tripodization…..or something like that.
Craig, help us out here, did News Caries start our sophomore year? Below is actually from “The Reamer” Not sure who’s or what that was. I do like the cartoon though. Anybody have memories about “The Reamer”?

#6 The Legacy of News Caries
If your name isn’t on the list, or you know some one who should be on the list, get on the phone! It is going to be a great weekend of fun and memories. (In a few more years we will have less of both……)
First, the layout. Monthly, 3-4 legal pages, calendar on the front page then announcements, cartoons by the Master Chris Choo, reports from Clinic Rep., DSA Rep., The Rumor Mill, and, of course, the party schedule.
A few social highlights from the first issue of our Sophomore year:
--Business appointment cards, $10 for 1000, (Note: half price of what LLUSD is offering), go class of 86!
--Magnifying loupes, (swing downs), $8.35 + tax, elsewhere, $20. (thanks Carey!)
--Free lunch, meet you little brother/sister for free “grinders”
--Disneyland tickets, ADA was meeting at Anaheim. 5pm-1am. $7.00! Was this 1883, or 1983?
--Sail to Catalina. $2 deposit, $16.50 per person, (thanks Paula!)
--“Rootin’ Tootin’ Cowboy Fall Roundup” to “get back in the saddle again” party. (Whaaaat, we talked like that?)
--Halloween at the Moore Ranch, a legacy in the making
The Rumor Mill
--Jeri was available for dating.
--Jim Redfield did not pull the plug on our fridge, I accidently did.
NOTE: we included a freshman calendar for our first New Caries, our Sophomore year with their test schedule, party schedule, etc., encouraging them to start their own newsletter.

#5 The Pep Boys
This should bring back some memories.
Here they are, Denny, Paul and John.
But not without some controversy. Below I quote from the News Caries Rumor Mill:
--Quote: “Dancin’” Jim Loye is a “Pep Boy”, is NOT TRUE. Jim wants to be one, but the 3 Pep Boys, John C., Paul W., and Dennis Z. won’t let him in.”" Unquote--
Warning, image below is disturbing…….

#4 The Good Ole Days?
Who was born in 1982?
Anne Hathaway
Prince William (He would benefit from ZOOM)
I still remember pulling teeth in the Oral Surgery Department. Rule was, wear gloves only if you are extracting wisdom teeth. I also remember clinic instructors washing, drying their gloves then putting them back in their pockets. I am now looking for pictures taken during surgery supporting my memory. Until then, this is a great shot from the Handbook. Quite a casual, hairy group watching the beginning of a pretty serious procedure. Note the mallet on the left.

# 3 It Cost How Much, (or how little)?
1982
This was surprising. Below is what it cost to get our DDS degrees. I think we can all agree the ROI was not too shabby. Totals range from $60,000-75,000 for tuition, supplies, equipment and living expenses. (Not including trips to Las Vegas.) In talking to recent graduates, they are looking at loans totally from $300,000 to over $500,000! Ouch, will there be a ROI?
BUT, in perspective, this is what we were charging our patients, and a comparison to what dentist were charging their patients in our Sophomore year.

#2 It all started with THE letter
Welcome back. We got about 70 hits on the first blog entry.
Yep, 1982. Now a cult favorite.
Hah, I kept this along with letters I wrote to people with way more money than I had, for loans or donations.
Freshman year……..Class Schedule
Got any favorites? Do you even remember half of these classes?
A few of you have had, or do have kids in dental school, got any comparisons for us?
